Most of us own a vehicle. I think it’s funny how we relate to our cars. Our cars say a lot about who we are. I know people, who own some really nice cars that would be considered expensive, fancy, elegant and to some, even impressive. There are some people who need to drive something new, up-to-date, who perhaps even get something new every couple of years. Then, there are others (like myself) who drive a car forever, which could be considered for one sole purpose, to get us where we need to go, when we need to go there.
Personally, I have owned 2 cars in my life. The first, I
kept for 19 years, and my current ride is approaching 15 years old. So you can
see what a car means to me. However, driving this car on a daily basis, I know
this vehicle really well. You could even say I know every nuance of the
vehicle. I know how it feels every time I get in, I know the sounds that it
makes, I know if something is not right and I can tell if something is not
right. Someone could refer to me, as someone how is probably “in tune” with his
or her car.
Being “in tune” with something, or even someone, is
important. It helps us not only to stay on top of the things we need to do in
our lives, whether it’s for someone else or even ourselves. The same thing
applies to our faith. Where are you at with your faith? Do you go to Mass on
Sunday to fulfill your weekly obligation and leave it at that? Or, do you do
more, like pray every day? Do you belong to any ministries at your parish? Do
you read scripture or any daily insights, meditations or reflections? Do you go
to any Bible study groups? You get the idea. These are all things that help you
get “in tune” with God. In the same way a mechanic can help you repair a car
when something goes wrong, God does the exact thing. The difference is that with
your mechanic, he does all the work, but with God, He wants us to help repair a
problem when things go wrong. We work with Him to change things, to improve
something, to make a wrong right.
Being “in tune” with God means being able to not only know
and understand what to do (or NOT do), it also means being able to hear and see
Him in our lives. We can see Him in others. We just need to know what to look
for and how to look for Him and we can achieve THAT by doing some of the things
I mentioned earlier.
We can hear him in many ways. Mainly through scripture,
where we can come to understand that a lot of the things contained in the
Bible, things that were written thousands of years ago, apply to our lives
today. It really is amazing when you start to discover how reading a simple
passage, can help you understand exactly how God is still working in all of our
lives today! Is it easy to understand these things? Maybe not at first, but the
more time you spend on it, the easier it gets and before long, you are “in
tune” with God. Is it possible to actually hear God’s voice? I believe it is.
It sounds crazy, but it seems like the more I do for God, the clearer it gets.
I think it’s probably more accurate to describe it as an “inner” voice, one
that speaks directly to my heart as opposed to actually hearing the same way
you do when someone is speaking to you.
I speak from experience because I spent most of my own life
doing the minimum I could in my faith and I thought that was enough. Then, God
started to work on in my life. I didn’t see it at first. But little by little I
started to see things differently in ways I had never seen before. And I
realized, the only way I was able to see the change, was when I started to do
more for my faith and to build that relationship with God. Now, it’s clear that
without doing those extra things I mentioned before really does help me be “in
tune” with Him. Those things help me understand, they guide me, they give me
direction, build me up, reinforce, instruct, sustain me, and most of all they
carry me through my daily life and without them, well, now I can’t imagine a
life without all of that.
So, what are you waiting for? Go get “IN TUNE” with god!
